The dunes people mean are at Merzouga, beside Erg Chebbi — a long road south and east, not a transfer you squeeze into an afternoon. You cross the High Atlas, then kasbah country, then gorges, then sand. The exact stops depend on whether you take our 3-day or 4-day private tour.

Marrakech to Merzouga: What the Journey Is Like
You cannot honestly treat Marrakech to Merzouga as a short hop. Our programs use a full outbound day (or two on the 4-day tour) and a full return day. The road climbs the High Atlas on the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m), drops into southern Morocco, then continues through valleys and gorges before the dunes appear.
Overnight stops break that distance: Dades on the 3-day tour; Aït Ben Haddou then Dades on the 4-day tour. You reach Merzouga in time for a late-afternoon camel trek, not as a lunch stop. The return is a long drive via Ouarzazate (the 3-day return also uses an Anti-Atlas alternative) and you are back in Marrakech by early evening.
We do not publish a single “X hours, Y kilometres” figure here because traffic, photo stops and which itinerary you chose all change the clock. If you need a slower road, take four days. Route context without booking tables is in the Marrakech to Merzouga guide.
Route itinerary
These are the two itineraries we actually sell. Tabs at the bottom of this page repeat the same days with inclusions and prices.
3 days — Marrakech to Merzouga
Displayed from 345 € per person for a private tour. Final quote on contact.
- Day 1 — Marrakech → Dades Gorges: Tizi n’Tichka, guided visit of Aït Ben Haddou, lunch stop in Ouarzazate, Valley of Roses and the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, overnight in a guesthouse in the Dades Gorges.
- Day 2 — Dades → Merzouga and camp: Todra Gorges (canyon walls about 300 m), then Tinjdad, Erfoud and the fossil region to Merzouga. Camel trek into Erg Chebbi (about 1.5 hours), sandboarding, sunset, Berber dinner and drumming. Night in a private tent.
- Day 3 — Sunrise and return: Sunrise, optional sandboarding or dune walk, camel back to Merzouga, breakfast and shower at the auberge, full-day drive to Marrakech via Ouarzazate and the Anti-Atlas. Early evening arrival.
4 days — extra night at Aït Ben Haddou
Displayed from 420 € per person. The extra night is at a traditional riad in the kasbah, not an extra night in the dunes.
- Day 1 — Marrakech → Aït Ben Haddou: Tizi n’Tichka, extended guided visit of the ksar (including its film history on this itinerary), overnight in a riad in the kasbah.
- Day 2 — Aït Ben Haddou → Dades Gorges: Ouarzazate and Atlas Studios, Valley of Roses (rose-water co-op in season), Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, sunset walk in Dades, guesthouse above the gorges.
- Day 3 — Dades → Merzouga and camp: Short hike in Todra Gorges, then Merzouga and Erg Chebbi. Camel trek about 1.5 hours, sunset, traditional dinner, Gnawa music and stargazing. Night in a private luxury tent with en-suite bathroom.
- Day 4 — Sunrise and return: Sunrise, optional sandboarding, camel back, breakfast and shower, full-day return via Ouarzazate, early evening in Marrakech.
Many guests add this desert block after a mountain trek. That combined itinerary is the Toubkal and Sahara combo (7 to 10 days), not a substitute for the 3-day Sahara tour.

The classic Marrakech to Merzouga loop: kasbahs and gorges outbound, one night in Erg Chebbi, long return the next day.
4-day Erg Chebbi desert experience
Slower southern Morocco: a night in Aït Ben Haddou, Atlas Studios, more time in the gorges, then the same dune camp with an en-suite tent.
Toubkal + Sahara
Trek first, rest in Marrakech, then the desert. Separate product — not a 3-day Sahara tour with a summit attached.

Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi Dunes
Merzouga is the village at the edge of Erg Chebbi, a dune field that has become Morocco’s most visited Sahara landscape for travellers coming from Marrakech. You come for the scale of the sand, the colour at sunset and sunrise, and a night away from the road.
It is still a worked landscape with camps, auberges and camel teams. Treat it as a place people live and work, not an empty set. The dunes are the reason for the long drive; they are not a replacement for the kasbahs and gorges you pass to get there.
Camel Ride in the Sahara
On both itineraries the camel trek is included: late afternoon, about 1.5 hours into the dunes to camp, then back to Merzouga by camel the next morning. It is a slow walk, timed for sunset on the way in. It is not a race and it is not a 4×4 dune bash.
Sandboarding is also included. Optional extra walking on the dunes is possible around sunrise. If someone in the group cannot ride, say so when you book — we adapt on a private tour rather than inventing a different public product.
Sleeping in a Sahara Desert Camp
You spend one night in camp in Erg Chebbi on both tours.
- 3 days: private tent. Dinner and drumming at camp. Shower the next morning at an auberge in Merzouga after the camel ride back.
- 4 days: private luxury tent with en-suite bathroom. Dinner, Gnawa music and stargazing are listed on that itinerary.
We do not describe heating, electricity or entertainment beyond what those program notes already list. If a specific amenity matters to you, ask when you request a quote.

How Many Days Do You Need for a Sahara Tour from Marrakech?
Three days gets you to Merzouga and a night in the dunes, with long driving on days 1 and 3. Four days is the same desert night plus more time at Aït Ben Haddou and in the gorges. More than four days is possible as a custom quote or via the Toubkal combo; we do not list a fixed 5-day Sahara product on this site.
Reaching Merzouga is not the same as lingering in southern Morocco. If the road sounds worse than the dunes sound good, Agafay is the honest alternative.
Best Time for a Sahara Desert Tour from Marrakech
Desert and mountain weather are not the same on the same day. Conditions vary.
- Spring: often the most comfortable window for the road and the dunes.
- Summer: hot in the valleys and on the sand; early starts help, water matters.
- Autumn: another strong window for most travellers.
- Winter: days can still work; nights at camp are cold. Our 3-day packing list notes temperatures can drop to 5 °C. Bring layers.
Is the Sahara tour suitable for families?
Couples, friends and small groups are the usual fit: private vehicle, your dates. Families can travel this way if they accept long days in a 4×4, a camel trek, and heat or cold. Solo travellers book as a private tour — the price is per person on the displayed rates; ask for a quote for one person rather than assuming a group rate.
We do not run a separate “family Sahara” product. Say ages and how much driving you will tolerate when you write.
What to Pack for a Sahara Desert Tour
From our program lists: small overnight bag (large bags stay in the 4×4), warm layers for night, walking shoes and sandals, sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, scarf or shemagh, camera with charged batteries, refillable bottle, torch or headlamp, basic toiletries. Add more warmth in winter. You do not need a trekking pack.

Displayed starting rates for our private tours are 345 € per person for 3 days and 420 € per person for 4 days. The final quote depends on dates, group size and any changes you request.
